In the heart of a bustling Port Moresby city, a young designer named William Maba Bray burst onto the fashion scene in 2023, igniting a wave of excitement with his debut collection.

Growing up in a tough neighborhood, he was inspired by the vibrant tapestry of cultures that surrounded him. His designs reflected this, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

William’s first runway show was at PNG Fashion Weeks “Voyager” in 2023. As the lights dimmed, the audience held its breath. The first model stepped out, draped in a flowing gown that shimmered like the night sky, intricately embroidered with symbols from various cultures. The collection was a celebration of diversity, with each piece telling a story. His collection “Sunset Destination” showed off his brilliance earning him the Rising Star Award for 2023.

Critics were captivated. Fashion enthusiasts hailed him as a visionary, and soon his creations were spotted on prominent figures and influencers alike. William’s designs challenged norms, encouraging self-expression and individuality. He believed that fashion should tell a story and he was a storyteller.

In 2024’s “Ascension” held at APEC Haus on the 15th September, 2024, WIlliam participated in the show that saw thirteen local designers and two international designers. His incredible collection named “Mabas Unfold” had the room at a standstill. The colors, the cut, the drama, William did it all and earnt the top prize that night, “Designer of the Year” walking away with K10,000 in cash and a trip to Fiji to showcase at Fiji Fashion Week on May, 2025.

As his brand grew, so did his commitment to his craft and community. William introduced new ideas, new ways to work materials and new and exciting production practices, inspiring others in the industry to follow suit. He collaborated with local artisans, ensuring that his designs not only looked good but also supported communities.

Williams's journey wasn’t without challenges. He faced skepticism from established designers and struggled with self-doubt. However, his passion and resilience fueled his drive. With each collection, he pushes boundaries, creating pieces that were not just clothing but statements.
