ROWEN SAM - PNG FASHION WEEKS QUIET DREAMER
Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – 19 March, 2025
At 17 years old, Rowen Sam is already navigating the delicate balance between shyness and the courage to step out of his comfort zone. Despite his quiet nature, Rowen is determined to pursue his dreams, knowing that growth comes with embracing challenges. While many may be surprised to learn that he's still a teenager due to his height and maturity, Rowen doesn’t let appearances define him. Instead, he sees each day as an opportunity to grow, and he believes that pursuing modeling will help him build confidence and break free from his shell.
Rowen’s roots lie in the beautiful landscapes of Kavieng, Rabaul, where he is proudly from. With a mixed heritage of Chinese and Irish descent—his father being from Ireland—Rowen’s identity is a unique blend of cultures. Growing up in such a diverse family environment has made him appreciate the different aspects of life, from the traditions of his Chinese heritage to the rich history of his Irish background. However, one thing has always remained constant: his unwavering love for Papua New Guinea (PNG), his home country. The land, the culture, and the people inspire him every day, and Rowen often finds solace in the beauty that surrounds him.
While Rowen may be quiet, he is far from passive. His love for basketball has been a significant part of his life, providing him with an outlet for both physical activity and mental clarity. “Basketball is my thing,” Rowen shares, his eyes lighting up with excitement when he talks about the game. “Whenever I get the chance, I love to play. It challenges me and helps me push myself to be better, both on and off the court.” Through basketball, Rowen has learned the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and discipline, all qualities he carries into other aspects of his life.
Gaming, particularly Call of Duty, is another passion of Rowen’s. For him, gaming serves as both an escape and a challenge. “It’s how I unwind after a long day,” he says with a smile. “It’s also a way to challenge myself, to think critically and stay sharp.” Despite the stereotype that gamers are isolated, Rowen finds that gaming brings him a sense of accomplishment, where he can test his skills and dive into different worlds, all while enjoying the thrill of competition.
Yet, it’s Rowen’s artistic side that adds another layer to his character. When he isn’t on the basketball court or playing video games, Rowen can often be found sketching landscapes or buildings, a hobby that’s been with him since he was young. His passion for drawing fuels his dream of one day becoming an architect. “I want to design green buildings for rural communities in PNG,” Rowen explains. “I believe that architecture can help improve people’s lives while preserving the environment.” His love for the land and culture of PNG, combined with his desire to create spaces that are both functional and eco-friendly, drives his ambition.
Family is at the heart of Rowen’s life, and he attributes much of his strength and determination to the unwavering support of his mother. Raised by his mum and his sister, Rowen has grown up with a deep appreciation for the sacrifices and dedication that family requires. His mother, a passionate advocate for environmental causes, particularly illegal logging and climate change, has always been a source of inspiration for Rowen. “My mum is my biggest role model,” he says. “She’s taught me the importance of standing up for what’s right and using our voices to create change. I want to follow in her footsteps and make a difference.”
Rowen is a quiet observer of the world around him. He may not speak often, but he notices everything. His reflective nature allows him to take in the world with a unique perspective, and he often uses those observations to guide his decisions. "I like to think and observe,” Rowen reflects. “I believe it helps me understand people and situations better, which is something I value."
Despite his quiet demeanor, Rowen has learned to embrace his voice and seize opportunities that come his way. One of the most significant steps he’s taken to break out of his shell is his recent application to be a model at PNG Fashion Week. For Rowen, this is more than just a chance to walk the runway—it's an opportunity to challenge himself, step outside his comfort zone, and pursue a dream he’s always held in the back of his mind. “I’ve always been a bit shy,” Rowen admits, “but modeling is something that excites me. It’s a way to express myself, and I hope it will help me grow as a person.”
Rowen’s application to PNG Fashion Week marks a pivotal moment in his journey. The event, known for celebrating the talent and creativity of Papua New Guinea’s fashion industry, provides a platform for young individuals to showcase their potential. "This platform gives youths a chance to see the world differently,” Rowen says. “It helps us build the courage to step out of our comfort zones and take on the world.” Rowen is hopeful that participating in PNG Fashion Week will not only boost his confidence but also inspire other young people who may be hesitant to pursue their own dreams.
Looking ahead, Rowen’s future is filled with possibilities. Whether he’s on the basketball court, in front of a sketchpad, or standing on the runway at PNG Fashion Week, Rowen Sam is poised to make a difference in the world. With the love and guidance of his family, and a heart full of dreams, Rowen’s journey is just beginning, and the world is eager to see where it will take him.
